A Sequence of Primitives
Assignment Brief:
Select a UN Sustainable development goal and find a related statistic within the context of Aotearoa. Then proceed to create a narrative that is expressed through a sequence of images.
I decided to research what UN Sustainable development goal(SDG) I found appealing to work on, out of the four that sounded interesting I decided to focus on the SDG goal of “No Poverty”. After deciding on a goal i researched it in the context of New Zealand and found that 1 in 7 children in New Zealand are under the effects of poverty.
I started by drawing some ideas that came to my head with pen and paper. Eventually I decided on my chosen idea and fleshed to make it easier for me to understand and explain to my peer’s ,the idea of the sketch if to have 7 circles travel across the frame. When the circles make it to the end I want them to jump back to start with one missing symbolizing the 1 in 7 concept.
The first prototype was extremely changeling for me to make because this is the first time I had to create code by myself. Overall I am fairly happy with the final outcome of the prototype. I think this was a good practice run as it taught me all the basics of coding on Processing 3 such as moving a shape and  how to use “if” statements. After getting feedback on my idea for peers and teachers I want to create something more complex that fits more in line with my chosen statistic.
For the final design I composed a looping image that represents how 1 in 7 kiwi kids suffer from poverty. From this, each triangle represents the breath of one child. One of the seven is missed to visualize the detrimental side of poverty which impacts all aspects of a child’s well being; this will hopefully be more in line with my original SDG goal than my first prototype.
Statement of intent:
Growing up in West Auckland I have first hand witnessed the struggles of poverty and how young children’s development are heavily affected by it. My intention of this animated GIF is to bring attention to the grip that poverty has on the young children of New Zealand. This animation portrays seven triangles in the shape of a heptagon, centering the canvas in a breathing motion. Two rotations reveal that one triangle is sent out. Each piece represents the breath of one child, and with every seven children, one child is lost. This visualizes how one in seven children are struck with poverty and they are left out of what other stable income families may have. The purpose of this effect is meant to show the detrimental aspect to this issue, especially with children who could have had a better future out for them.
